Also, drivers were more courteous and less distracted than today when those freeways were built.

It seems many of the posts in this thread are kinda missing the point. Engineers in the 50's, 60's, and 70's had no way of knowing the state would devolve into the mess it is today.

The hacks you folks continue to vote for have put the screws to you. I got out and moved to Encinitas. The mayor, years ago made all the promises and did what? He is just another babbling buffoon that has done nothing. There are more craters in the roads down there than the surface of the moon.
Bums everywhere in the downtown area. It's so bad the bums don't live under the bridges any longer during summer, they have tents on top of the bridges crossing Freeway 5. The city does what to get rid of bums.........NOTHING
Now the city is bleaching the streets because of hepatitis or what ever they call it.
What about all the signs calling for people not to put garbage in the streets as it goes down out to the ocean.....but I guess bleach is just fine.

The fact that nothing really has been done in the past 30 years to expand and improve many of our freeways besides for parts of the 805 and 15, is a cause for serious concern. All the city and county leaders have done this entire time is TALK the past 30 years about how they are going to fix this and fix that, but barely any action has been done to address these issues.

I recently drove up to L.A./OC area again, and I was so surprised by the amount of new freeway construction/expansion going on up there. Also their freeways are all mostly very smooth to drive on. New asphalt on pretty much all the freeways, there overpasses and bridges also looked like they have been repaired. Compared to SD, they are heavenly to drive over for the most part, while a lot of San Diego’s freeway look ancient and feel ancient to drive on.

Does Sandag have any responsibilities in this as they fund the majority of SD’s infrastructure projects?

Just to add, drivers today drive like maniacs out there, I swear the average speed on our freeways seems to be 80-85mph and going 90-100 is now considered “somewhat fast”. People get pissed if I’m going 70! I’m trying to save gas and be safe especially if I have riders in my car, but man, so many people simply have no patience and the road rage, one upping other drivers showing others who’s boss on the road is a common douchebag trait San Diego is well known for.

Those two examples you gave are good merges; I gave examples of merges that could be improved.
Well you can add more lanes onto the merges but all that does is relocate the back up. Instead of just 1 lane merging onto the 15 from 8, now you've got 3. The backup then shifts to the drivers south of the 15/8 merge. Wouldn't you agree?

What do you expect when most of the politicians spend it on pet projects. Look at the Spending Bill that Trump regretted ever signing and in it is a LOT of discretionary stuff and a lot of WTF stuff like elderly people falling down the stairs in India.
