South Park is great for kids and not too far of a drive to PT Loma. Mission valley, Kensington, Mission Hill's, and the university heights area. Central, famil friendly, safe areas for the city life. The beach is a 15 minute drive as well and Balboa park is close as well. If you don't plan on taking your kid to the ocean, downtown, or most events in the city often I would try East Chula Vista Bonita, or poway

You didn't mention your housing budget, but if you can afford it, you might want to look for a place right in Point Loma where you'll be working. Liberty Station, is a new housing development which has stores, restaurants and the excellent High Tech schools within walking distance might be a good starting point, and it's family oriented.

If you can't afford Point Loma, then look along the I-94 and I-8 corridors -- areas like Talmadge, La Mesa, Rancho San Diego, Del Cerro, San Carlos. Serra Mesa, Allied Gardens. A lot of people who work on Point Loma (at the Navy facilities) live in those areas. Another good option would be Claremont Mesa and perhaps Mission Valley if you're OK with a condo.

University City is nice, but if you can afford University City, you should also be able to afford Liberty Station/Point Loma, and there's something to be said for being ten minutes from work, especially for a single mom with very young children.
