Going to interview soon for a position in San Diego and the place of employment would be near the University of California - San Diego campus. I am wanting to know where in that area I could rent an apartment to live comfortably. I am willing to live 30 to 50 minutes away from there if it means I will live comfortably. Any suggestions on which city to live in?

I would need a 1 bedroom apartment and the most important things it should have is washer/dryer connections. Single, no kids, no family.

I'm deciding between a possible San Diego move or moving to Pittsburgh, which I already have a job offer and waiting for a background check to clear before I start. Starting salary would be $75,000 a year to start with but would move up to $90,000 in the second year. This would be for both San Diego and Pittsburgh. Just wondering if I could live comfortably in San Diego area with that salary.

Lots of apartment rentals in the University City area of La Jolla, which is nearby the campus. If you don't want to be around so many college students or want something cheaper, you can look at Mira Mesa. Its a few mile drive, but not terrible.

Pittsburgh is a bargain place to live. I've lived there while working on my BS degree at PITT. However... forget Pittsburgh. The weather sucks and it's very ingrown ie. 6 fingers on one hand is fairly common. If you have only 5 fingers on your hand, you will be treated like a foreigner unless you come from the limited Pittsburgh family names.

My daughter and 2 friends just rented a 3 bedroom townhome in the UTC area not far from UCSD. They are mid 20's professionals and their neighborhood is a mix of young professionals and students. They like this area since they can walk to restaurants and shops and in the fall the trolley will be a 10 minute walk away so they will be able to go out in Little Italy, Downtown and Old Town and not have to worry about driving. Their townhome has a 2 car garage and comes with a washer and dryer and rents for $3,200 a month.

Here is an example of a 1 bedroom apartment in the area close to UCSD:
