If you're into tourist related stuff then just go into the lobby of any hotel and you'll find free brochures filled with lots of interesting stuff.

Balboa Park, of course the zoo, a trip to Old Town, lunch on the water (I know that is sorta beachy, but a little different) Drive up to Del Mar. A bike ride on Coronado Island.

I am sure many who live in SD will have more ideas.

Nita

Things To Do In San Diego - San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau

The San Diego tourism web site lists a great many things to do but like mewzikguy said check out the Weekly Reader and the City Beat as they often list free or reduced price things to do in the city.

I think hands down one of the best, mostly free, things to do in SD is hang out at Balboa Park. There's so much history there besides the fact that it is a National Historic Landmark. There's tons of museums (sometimes they're free) and just a lot of gorgeous walking paths.

I also like walking around downtown San Diego, Horton Plaza, and Seaport Village.

You can go to Old Town and walk around, check out the Waley House and the Missions.

And finally, if you are an adventurer, go down to TJ and hit up Revolucion for a cheap drink or to buy some cheap Viagra at one of the many quality Pharmacias

Here's just a handful of ideas. Thousands more are possible in San Diego, but I will donate a couple.

-Drive to the top of Mt Soledad in La Jolla and enjoy the breath-taking views.
-Go to Pizza Port in Solana Beach and enjoy a medium pie with fresh tomato and jalapenos, then walk off the food on the beach that's within walking distance of the parking lot
-Grab a coffee, then go to La Jolla Shores around sunset (not this weekend though) and try to get a parking spot in the front that looks at the water (if you circle the lot a few times, these spots open up in the evening).
-Drive to Coronado on the weekend and eat breakfast at the place that sits on the pier facing the Bay/City (name escapes me). When you are done, rent a bicycle and ride the path that takes you down to the base of the Coronado bridge and back
-Catch a Padres game and sit in the grassy area outside of the stadium; bring a picnic lunch (not free, but close to it)
-Walk around Seaport Village on Saturday and listen to the local band that is usually playing there in the center of the shopping area
-Drive down to the end of Rosecrans in Point Loma and enjoy the views of both the bay and ocean. Drop down to the ocean side right there before Cabrillo National Monument and enjoy the little park that sits right on the ocean. On clear days, you can see the Channel islands from this point.
-Walk or bike around Scripps/Miramar lake
-Do the same around Lake Poway (much more rural than Miramar, but further out)
-Drive to Julian and buy a pie and some cool magnets for the fridge

Great ideas. If you do go to Lake Poway, you have to pay to enter and park (unless you're a Poway resident). Of course, you can do what I did and just park down the street and walk in.

Really? I was there just the other day and there was nobody in the booth. Maybe I got lucky??

I believe that it's the ability to enjoy these types of simple inexpensive activities year round is what makes San Diego a desirable place to live and raise a family.
