But the Bay Area is so trendy and hip! Dogs and cats are so uncool.

Comes on the heels of SF banning sugar soft drinks and insisting vendors in city buildings switch their machines from Coke to 100% Fruit Juice. There is no end to the nanny state. Forget freedom, they will legislate health! Ridiculous.

Ain't going to happen no matter what the concerns are over stray animals. People have to have their pets and not just goldfish

Not to mention all the pet stores in SF, some of which have been in business for decades. What are they going to do, put them all out of business in a down economy? And why? The article says it's because they think they can legislate people's impulse purchases. What a joke.

Typical SF non-sense of flirting with bizarre legislation and no interest in enforcing current laws. Dog poop is the biggest pet related problem in the city... No one here clears cleans up after their pets and there are piles of dog poop everywhere...like parks, sidewalks and every public place. Sometimes I am just stunned at how people live in the filthy conditions here. Walking on the grass at a SF park is like walking in a cattle feed lot...

I don't really care about the soda thing since it's only in places like schools and elementary school kids should really not be guzzling Pepsi all day.

The pets thing is dumb though. It's impossible to have a pet in SF if you rent because the vast majority of landlords will not allow pets. At some point I saw something about legislation that would force landlords to allow pets, but I guess it went nowhere. Banning pet stores will just make it more miserable for that small number of people who live somewhere where they are allowed to have a pet. I get that people are being dumb about hamsters but jeez, educate them about being responsible, don't ban stores. I really don't like the anti-pet vibe in SF.

What's next? A city-wide ban on fast food restaurants and junk food?
