I will be visiting San Francisco in the fall. Out of all the Starwood hotels, what is the best hotel? St. Regis, W, etc.? Which do you recommend?

By far the St. Regis. Its only a few years old and very deluxe. The W is "meh". I've stayed there several times and the rooms are shabby. Unless they have remodeled in the past couple of years, if you can swing the St. Regis, that would be an ideal choice.

Both are near the Moscone Center.

If you can swing it, definitely the St. Regis. I believe though that it is quite a bit more expensive. They aren't really comparable hotels as they target a different clientele and the St. Regis is much more luxurious. The W is "cool" and "hip" and if you are looking for a hotel with a younger crowd (i.e. 30s), then go for the W. If you want high-end luxury and more classic styling (and a crowd more likely to be in their early 50s), then go with St. Regis.

I actually have Westin points so the whole trip will be free. I take it with points and free rooms the St. Regis must be a wise choice!

Is the area around the St. Regis good for travelers? Lots to do? Haven't been back since 1998!

I love the St Regis. Almost moved there a few years ago.
