Hi everyone. My husband and I are planning to move from North Carolina to California. I lived in San Francisco and in Laytonville many years ago, but have not done much visiting since, so I don't really know how things may have changed. Our finances won't permit us to live in the city, so we would like to live north of San Francisco as far up as Mendocino County. I would very much like opinions about good places to live, purchase a home, and possibly raise a family. We need relative affordability, some nature, community, access to excitement every once in a while, and an overall laid-back, liberal environment. Any suggestions?

Well, Sonoma County is a great place to live...but it really depends on what you consider affordable. It costs less than San Francisco and Marin but more than Mendocino.

Check out the town of Sebastopol. It sounds like it may be up your alley.

Thank you! I'm checking it out online right now.

As for affordability, Asheville (where we live now) is much pricier than the surrounding towns, but NOTHING compared to California. As long as we find a house we can afford that has 4 walls and a roof, a bit of a yard for the dog, and everything functioning inside, we'll be great!

Default Did you find a place to live in Northern California

Hi- We're also relocating to Northern Cali from North Carolina; Wilmington area. I'd love to hear what you ended up doing and if you have any advice. We're looking north of San Fran but need to be fairly close so we're looking at Santa Rosa, Bennett Valley.

Where the heck is Laytonville? I've been all over the Bay Area, but this sounds like it must be some little town far, far away. I think Sebastopol is a great idea. And isn't there a place called Forestville nearby? That area is cute too.

What about jobs?? Both Sonoma and Mendocino counties are high on unemployment except maybe in the wine industry and some tourism.

I believe Mendocino Countys economy is based on growing pot. I saw a documentary about it on 60 minutes or Dateline.

Check out Grass Valley. It is beautiful there and is very liberal. It sounds like you have a lot of options depending on what you can afford..Mendocino also sounds like a good option too..It really all depends on what kind of jobs you are able to get in these areas. I think you'll have to be a little more specific with your info.

I'm in Asheville now as well looking to move to San Francisco. I'm 23 and and looking for video production work. I have a dog and will probably look for roommates on craigslist but don't know where the best place in San Francisco would be to go? Any advice?

Stay away from Oakland (Alameda County), Richmond (Contra Costa County), and Vallejo (Solano County).

All high crime areas, with serious budget problems.
