I am setting here watching this report from Lisa Ling called Marijuana Nation. she is reporting about how Canada and California have Medical Marijuana laws and they are talking about how elected officials in Oakland are so open about Marijuana that there is a university in Oakland called Oaksterdam University?? and they specialize in teaching people about the medical marijuana laws in California. They are talking about how Oakland is the new Amsterdam hence Oaksterdam. Is this documentary credible?? Is It really like that out in Oakland??

Some reading that will answer your question:

Oaksterdam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No, there are no bars where anybody can walk in and light up and hang out. I will say a couple of the clubs in SF i've been to have people hanging out inside smoking and watching movies. But overall it's nothing like Amsterdam. The Oaksterdam thing is for "Patients" with medical marijuana cards. It's not open to all.

I don't think Oakland will be the next Amstertam but in both SF and Oakland I've either seen or smelled people smoking in parks and night clubs. In downtown Oakland there is a cafe that sells marijuana cookies, brownies, drinks, you name it. I had no idea that the place was known for marijuana until someone tapped me for a light.

Can you tell me what place this is because as somebody with a Cannibus card I can tell you, you will not be allowed past the door without going past armed security who looks you up on a computer to make sure you're in the system. Moderator cut: Personal jab

Cityboy, don't remember the name of the place but it is located downtown Oakland on Broadway crossing 19th or 17th St.

I have a medical card, and agree that security is very tight... so tight, in fact, that I was turned away with my original embossed prescription recently (since it was new & had to be verified). If you got into one without being carded, I think they need to be reported for violations. And to answer the OP, Oakland has become the bastion for medical marijuana, but unlike Amsterdam you actually need identification. I won't claim it's difficult to get the ID card, however, so in a way it is just like Amsterdam. I have been to both places, and therefore can speak from experience - LOL.
