Hi Everyone,

I hope you can help me out, any information or advice would be greatly appreciated. I am a single, late 20's male who will be moving from Vancouver, Canada to work in Palo Alto in April 2011. I was planning on living in San Francisco because I am hoping it would allow me to meet more people.

What are your thoughts on where to live? I know the commute can be pretty bad, but I dont mind the commute even if it is an hour each way.

My main concern is living close enough to restaurants and bars so I can head out for a beer when I feel like it but at the same time allows me to meet a bunch of new people.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Kind of depends on if you'll be driving or taking public transit. Caltrain is really the only way down the peninsula and the stations in SF are in really out the way areas. Potrero Hill and Dogpatch are near the SF stations but they aren't super happening areas, there are some bars and restaurants but not a lot and it feels a bit isolated from the rest of the city.

If you're driving or don't mind taking Muni to Caltrain (which adds at least 20 to 30 minutes to the commute), you could try these areas:

- Noe Valley
- The Mission/Duboce Park area (stay west of Mission to avoid crime/grime)
- Glen Park (too far to take Muni to Caltrain easily though)

You will be doing a "reverse" commute and driving could work well for you - just get to know the new vehicle laws. You are so young, why not just sign short term leases in different areas and enjoy the view! Most of the area has so much to offer that it would take months to explore everything. You will have time later to decide where to settle down for the duration. Best of luck and welcome.

I live in SF and work in Palo Alto. My neighborhood, Pacific Heights, has a lot of restaurants and is very walkable. There aren't a ton of bars, but there are plenty of coffeehouses if that matters to you. My commute generally takes around 50 minutes in the morning and about an hour (or slightly more) during the evening commute. It is pretty expensive in this neighborhood, but overall it's the favorite place in which I've lived during my eleven years in the Bay Area.
