How much do you want to spend on rent and for what size?

Without knowing this, it's meaningless to recommend districts because 90% of people inquiring don't understand the high cost of rent in SF, especially in the nicer districts.

My budget is around the 500k to 1 million area. For that I would want a decent 1 bed room or a nicer studio.

Pacific Heights is always a safe bet. Focus on the areas surrounding Fillmore, as it has a fair amount of shops and restaurants. Other great spots: Cole Valley, Laurel Heights, Inner Richmond, Inner Sunset, Noe Valley.

If you are coming out for a visit, I recommend taking a few docent-led walking tours of neighborhoods to get a sense of the history. San Francisco Walking Tours | City Guides

You'll be able to find a 1 bedroom or nice studio in every district with that budget. I'd recommend looking in Marina, Nob Hill, North Beach, and Telegraph Hill.

These districts are completely different from each other, but they are safe and have plenty of shopping, restaurants and night life. You can do a bit more research on them and definitely check each area out when you visit. I'm sure you will fall in love with one of these areas. I envy you, lol I'd love to own a place in one these districts!

The Castro (aka Eureka Valley) if you like cultural and lifestyle diversity.

Mission Dolores / Mission District (west of Valencia) if you like hipsters.

Noe Valley if you prefer a bit family-oriented.

Potrero Hill (north slope), see above but closer to FiDi and the freeways.

Pacific Heights / Presidio Heights if you want to live among billionaires.

Marina / Cow Hollow if you prefer to be among yuppies.

North Beach / Telegraph Hill / Russian Hill / Nob Hill.

Cole Valley, only a few blocks from Haight Ashbury and far enough away from the homeless and panhandlers.

South Beach / Mission Bay - very new and very modern high rise condos, still building.

Duboce Triangle / Ashbury Heights - very quiet and sleepy yet only a few blocks from Market St. and the Castro.

I'm generalizing of course and there are many, many more great nabe in SF. But that should be enough to get you started. Good luck.
