The Bay Area (especially the Western half of it) - the "retirement community" version of Monte Carlo, sans casinos and glitz.

But demographically, that is the trajectory. Mega wealthy and "the help."

Sort of sad in a way.

So a strong economy in regards to hospitals automatically means the Bay Area is a "retirement" community". Right.....nevermind that a large part of that economy is related to medical schools, research and biotech, and nevermind the fact that the Bay Area is not even over-saturated with old people in the first place, so it's weird that you would call it a retirement community. Also we have casinos and "glitz" here too.

No, the growth in hospitals like the growth in premium elder housing communities are lagging indicators of the demographic shift taking place. Lots of old people with un believable amounts of financial resources are either staying in (as opposed to the normal cashing out and bailing out of) the area or are moving in. If you think about it, the cost structure here has made this inevitable. Other demographic groups are either not here for the long term or never arrive in the first place.

Also, I made my commentary specific to the Western part of the Bay Area (e.g. Marin, SF, San Mateo and NW Santa Clara Counties).

The worker bees at biotech, and other supposedly "hot" industries meant to replace all the ones which have left, mostly commute from the East Bay or beyond.
