I shop at the corner of Dutton and Bancroft a lot -- my favorite hardware store is there and that Safeway is small enough for me to wander around without my knees screaming, and the donut shop (GREAT blueberry donuts!!) is a perfect place for a donut and to pick up a stupid tax ticket (lottery ticket -- I rarely play, except when the pots get big). Zocalo's coffee is great, too. And it's my understanding you can recycle your batteries there.

HOWEVER. This little piece of heaven does have it's problems. The hardware store gets broken into it seems a lot. Practically every time I go in, she tells me that someone stole something -- last time it was the key making machine. The time before that she told me the donut shop had their front window busted out, and that Safeway -- I've been there more than a few times when the cops were there hauling someone out. And I don't go there at night alone -- I am a 52 year old woman with some mobility issues.

On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a 5. Given that I live in a scary part of East Oakland -- I'd live there. But -- in my opinion, and keep in mind, this is only my opinion, this area is going downhill. Looks nice, but stuff is happening more and more there. And if the OPD really does start cracking down in East Oakland, it will push the bad element out... to San Leandro. Because it's not like the bad guys are going to straighten up and fly right -- they'll just meander down the street.

BUT -- You can see what's going on here...

I go to the Safeway often and have for years...

Lately... it seems someone is always asking for a handout as I walk in and when I leave.

At night, the store locks one of the exits... too much merchandise walking out the door.

The clothing shop shop on the corner has been there forever... they now sell mostly school uniforms... they were having theft problems when they carried a full line of clothes.

I still get my Smog checks at the 76 station across the street from Safeway...

A block away, Paradiso restaurant does good business and draws from outside the area.
