Hi All,

I'm a divorced soon to be retired father of 2 grown children looking for a little excitement in his later years. I remember visiting san francisco briefly in the late 70's and really enjoying it there.

Part me is right now wanting to get out and potentially embark on another "frisco adventure" but perhaps this one on a more permanent basis i.e. living. Would a fun loving single man in his late 60's be a fish out of water in san francisco today or would there be a community i could find myself adjusted to? As well what areas would any of you recomend me looking into to live? I have a fair size nesting egg.

Thanks.

Allcatraz Island? LOL

Did you see the news about SFO possibly allowing micro mini (under 150 sf) apartemnts?

I can't lend information about where you might fit in. I'm also retired, male with two adult grown and gone children. I retired in San Diego and moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina. I was in SFO in the 60's. We have a mini version of that here.

I think you would have a great adventure even if you decide it's not where you want to be for the rest of your life. It's changed since the 70's but it's still a fun place and you have nothing to loose and time to explore!

I live in the 'burbs and don't get to SF much anymore (used to work there) but I love the fact that I CAN go whenever I want. It's like knowing the ocean is near by...it makes me feel secure for some crazy reason!

You will not be a fish out of water. There are a lot of us retired, soon-to-be-retired 60 plus folks enjoying the bay area. If you want the "San Francisco Adventure" (BTW: do not call it frisco, the locals cringe at that word), I suggest that you try living in SF to get the full experience. I am a former midwesterner who has lived in the area since 1974; once you move here, difficult to leave! Try meet ups for finding your tribe, specific interests, or start your own meet up after you arrive. Bay area can be a friendly place, but beware that people can get very busy with activities, may be difficult to connect with people due to scheduling, but do not let that discourage you. Lots of single women your age who would be happy to show you around the city, join you in activities!

If you can afford it and enjoy urban living, then go for it. Look up condo prices and see what you can manage. Plenty of older wealthy people from the burbs buy a condo and move back to SF when their kids move out.

SF isn't the same town it was in the 70s, some parts for better and some for worse.
You might want to visit a few times before making your mind up.

^^ This.

And the real estate market, while always ridiculous, is getting positively horrific now with no relief in sight.

Yep, if you can afford to live in SF, then go for it! It's a great place, especially if you can afford to live around North Beach, Telegraph Hill or Marina, even better.
