Working in the financial district AND we have two toddler sons. Would like to have some urban vibe and these are within our budget ($600k or less sfh is preferred). Picked these because my hubby likes to work on cars for fun. Need garage so homes that are not too old relatively low crime and decent schools and reasonable commute to city. Only like Linda Mar area in Pacifica. We live in Alameda love it but are being priced out of market for houses with garages....

That's a weird set of choices. They're not only in 3 different parts of the Bay Area, they're very different places. Pacifica is a fog-laden coastal town, historically working class. Castro Valley is an unincorporated middle class area of the East Bay that some people call "redneck." Novato is in Marin County, considered to be a more regular town than some Marin towns, but still Marin. Each of the three is easily 45 minutes' commute to the Financial District. Castro Valley is probably the easiest because it has a BART station.

What are you looking for in a place to live? that might help get responses.

Pacifica would be the closest to the city, but these choices are indeed odd

Castro Valley is total suburbia, and Novato/Marin are not at all urban...

You know that Novato is going to be a huge commute for your husband, right? Plus Novato has nothing of an Urban vibe. It's typical suburb Marin County.

I think for what you are looking for (Urban, single family homes with a garage, good schools, safe), if you're priced out of Alameda, you're probably priced out of other places too.

I'd look at Walnut Creek, which at least has a viable downtown, but at $600k, I'm not sure your money will go that far. Bay Area housing cost as of late have gone from expensive to incredibly over priced, not to mention inventory is very low.
