Perhaps this is part of or most of the OPD's problem. Bad cops are bad cops and that leads to bad shoots!

I think that's the problem. OPD is like the highest paid in the country. And obviously it isn't really working.....

12 from my High School class went into OPD and many more from other graduating classes.

I tested a few years later at the same time they shut down the academy... just bad timing on my part.

There are a lot of dedicated individuals plus the reserves are basically volunteers that wear the badge.

I've gone on many ride alongs with East Bay Departments... Alameda Sheriff, San Leandro and Oakland... know several of the past chiefs and part of the problem from my limited prospective is many that are crime victims simply will not speak to law enforcement.

On one of my ride alongs... a man was shot and laying on the sidewalk... many people saw what happened, including the man that was shot.... not a single person was willing to give a description or provide their contact information on that night in Oakland.

It was very different in the other jurisdictions... people would come out of their homes, stop their cars... all willing to get involved.

If the neighborhood refuses to get involved, Law Enforcement is already at a disadvantage from the get-go.

From my experience, the cops in Oakland are either completely lazy/ pretty cool

I'm convinced it's because I'm white, but they've either been helpful when I needed them or just out of the picture altogether.

I can't imagine what it's like being a young adult of color in a rougher neighborhood though. Forget it

having had to deal with public service employees a great deal in alameda county, any goodness in any person would be broken in a matter of months, if not weeks or days. oakland is a horrible place where one human tragedy after another plays "can you top this". after a while, good intelligent people decide to go elsewhere where there is reasonable hope to maintain their sanity. that leaves the incompetent apethetic money grabbers to serve the public.

Mayor Quan has made it worse, if that's believable. She's one of the worst public servants in the Bay Area.

Yawns...at least Oakland's never filed bankruptcy like Orange County did back in the 1990s-not very good for a supposed bastion of fiscal conversatism.

I'm not sure what Orange County has to do with this thread, but there isn't a single city in Orange County that has a violent crime rate higher than Oakland.
