A few months after living there, I noticed a lot of people saying, "That guy was 'HELLA' cute".

Is this the norm, or an isolated case?
LOL

I thought it was pretty neat myself.

I remember starting to say that in junior high (79, 80). I grew up in NorCA. I'd still say it now, but I live in Nashville. Hella Bible Belt! Can't even say sucks without people going apoplectic.

LOL! :-) I thought any dramatic phrases were expressed in the O.C.

Yup, "Hella" is definitely a regional word, which has been around since I was in... uh, middle school? (late '80s) My cousin from Boston teases me about it sometimes, but then I remind her of "wicked awesome."

Btw, the more drawn out you say it, the more dramatic it is... like "that drink was heeellllllla yummy!"

It's more like the L.A. version "totally" - something is hella cool, hella lame, etc. But I suppose it can also be used like "helluva"... hella big cat, hella pretty sunrise, and so on. It is a versatile word, LOL.

Pretty sure South Park took "hella" national a few years ago.

I had a friend from Maine that said "wicked" all the time. I hear it a lot now. It's definitely spreading like a weed.
