We are considering a move to the East Bay Area. My husband would be employed at Livermore National lab. We are a family of 5, and would like to know what neighborhoods to consider that would be family friendly, with a good school district and not insanely expensive.

We have looked online and Tracy is very appealing, but we have been told the commute is terrible.

Any info/suggestions are welcome!

Start in Livermore. Nice town, good schools.

If you must leave Livermore, then check out the towns next to Livermore: Dublin and Pleasanton.

They are a bit more expensive. Livermore is pretty cheap by Bay Area standards.

If Livermore is too expensive? Maybe Mountain House. There is some traffic, but there are also surface street to Livermore. MH is up and coming in the "if we build it they will come" way.

You can't lose with Livermore. No commute, good schools, full of families. Go for it!

All of the commutes to and from the lab are terrible. The commutes in the Bay Area are terrible. Ok, now that that is over with, have you thought about taking a 1 or 2 week mini vacation to the area to see what is available.

I'm amazed at how many people make a move and rely on forum talk rather than actually going to visit the area. While the opinions are always valid, everyone has a different perspective and the questions posed usually don't give anyone enough information other than to provide an anecdotal response.

With one or two weeks of traveling around the area, sampling the local consumer markets and visiting some schools you quickly find out the best suited places. It costs less to do that than move a second or third time locally.

Livermore itself is a very nice, family oriented town with good schools.

Tracy is over the hill in the valley and the commute is hell.

Please visit these places and see 4 yourself.

Livermore will cost significantly more than Tracy, because it's objectively a better place to live in most measures (schools, services, atmosphere, crime) and cuts at least a half-hour off the commute to anywhere.

There are at least 3 different ways to get to LLNL from Tracy. Patterson Pass Rd. Tesla Rd. Even the old Altamont Pass Rd. in addition to the freeway. The first two dump out practically in front of the lab.
