Compared to what?

They've come down a helluva lot since the overinflated prices a while ago. Seems like they're more in line with reality now. If you want Iowa prices, move to Iowa.

To the point where one can get a reasonable single family home for $500,000-600,000!

My daughter bought a 2 bedroom 1 bath home in Oakland last year for 315,000. If you can't find something you like in your price range, go away. Go tell the rest of the world how you can't afford Ca for Christ's sake. My folk lived with one car and one salary and my Mom cooked cassaroles to save money, and they were able to buy a home in San Leandro on an Oakland cop's salary.

If my daugher can do it on a single young woman's salary in this day and age, I don't feel sorry for you. Get over yourself or move somewhere else where you think you can do better. Oh, and good luck making the same salary in Iowa.

I'm so sick of people who move here and expect so much more. Go home. Do better. Prove yourself right and post here about it. Amen.

The strong demand is caused by the improving job market, especially in technology. If there's another "technology recession" (lessening demand for goods/services from this sector), you may see a small decline in some areas.

I'm in the process of selling a lovely 1500 sq. ft. 3bd/2ba townhome with gorgeous ocean/mountain views on the peninsula in the price range you specified.

Would that price buy a bigger home with a bigger yard elsewhere in the country? Surely. But saying there isn't affordable homes in that price range is nonsense.

LOL at lecturing people and telling stories about cooking casseroles. Also by telling an anecdote about your folks, you are basically adding nothing to the OP's point, as home prices have obviously vastly outpaced inflation since our parents' time.

Considering the worst recession since the Great Depression barely made a dent in the economy here, I don't think we'll see another technology recession for some time. OP is going to be disappointed.

Sorry you will have to pay up the butt here in the SF bay area. The further you go inland though the more affordable it gets. But where do you want to live?

Build 100,000 condos in SF. That would be a good start.
