We are a family of 5 and are looking for an apartment (3 bedrooms) in San Carlos or Belmont. Our children are 12, 10 and 6 years old. It is for one year. The apartment can be furnished or not. Do you know how much is the rent for a 3 bedrooms in this area? What is the best way to find an apartment in this area? We are from Switzerland so it is difficult for us to go there and to visit it right away. We are looking for a place starting March 1st, 2014. Is San Carlos and Belmont cheaper than Palo Alto? Many thanks for your help!

I used to live there, but moved away 3 years ago, rent was much cheaper then, back then a 3bd was $2000-2500. Now it is probably $2600-3500/mo, but that is just a guess.

The best way to find an apartment is by Craigslist, the Bay Area really seems to love Craigslist. Most of the apartments are going to be older (built 1965-1979) with a few newer buildings, most have been remodeled at some point, but they will be built to the standard of the era. They will not have A/C, unless it is fairly new. They will not have a washer and dryer in unit, unless that was added in later, or it is fairly new, many newer renovations have added this to some buildings.

San Carlos and Belmont are both cheaper than Palo Alto, in some cases way cheaper. Closer to downtown San Carlos will be more expensive, some hillside areas are expensive too. The housing varies, some are apartments up in the hills, others are near El Camino (a major street).

Thanks a lot for your help!

I heard public schools are really good in Belmont and San Carlos. Can you confirm?

3 bedroom apartments are hard to find, not so many exist here. I'd suggest to look for townhouse or house. The price for a house can be around $4,000.

Thanks for this information. I saw a few houses in Craiglist but I don't know if utililies are included usually in the price mentionned. If a house is 3,400 do I have to think that I will have to add water, electricity, heat to that?

For example to this add: Charming Home Awaits You on San Carlos' Brittan Avenue

Water, electricity, gas & garbage collection will probably need to be added every month. Utilities are rarely included in single family home rentals.
