Yup, and apparently not a very inclusive one (according to a friend who is an alumna).

That is overkill for sure...but when political cartoons mostly depict people as eating chicken and watermelon...then they are on the stereotype list.

But maybe, just to be unique, they cold dig up some other types of african american food stuff. Like how about my dad's fave, "pirlou"

Here is a recipe form random blog:
evil chef mom: pea and bacon pirlou

Pirlou is basically a southern rice pilaf sort of dish, particularly in the coastal "Low country" areas of North and South Carolina, where the Gullah population is.

Or is it just easier to trope in stereotypes?

Yeah, I noticed that too.

That said, I definitely see a lapse in good judgement on the part of those responsible for creating the menu. I dont think it was deliberately intended to perpetuate racial stereotypes, but sadly it does.

I personally live for fried chicken, corn bread and collared greens.

Soul Food is something I ate with regularity growing up. Usually at friends homes.

I have a question for whomever would like to answer. If the school wanted to create a menu to celebrate Black history month, what would have been more appropriate?

The "soul food" we ate at my house growing up, looked a lot more like this:
chicken pirlou/bog: South Carolina Chicken Bog - Chicken Bog recipe - Chicken bog recipes
tomatoes and okra: Stewed Okra and Tomatoes Recipe : Patrick and Gina Neely : Food Network
fish fried with cornmeal (no batter, served with vinegar)
pepper vinegar (this goes on the greens): Pepper Vinegar Recipe | Epicurious.com
boiled cabbage like so (with bacon grease, but not the bacon): Slow Cooked Boiled Cabbage Recipe - Cabbage Taste Like Grandma's
black eyed peas
sweet potatoes (in many incarnations)

And how about carolina bbq (eastern style)
North Carolina Barbecue: A Tale of Vinegar, Hush Puppies, and the Whole Hog | The Paupered Chef

No tomato BBQ sauce here, it was vinegared!

And boiled peanuts: South Carolina Boiled Peanuts

There you go, that's my family's soul food. I didn't dive into the other seafood preparations..but there were lots.
