If you get a Oakland area code, is that considered less than having a San Fran or Marin County area code?

No one cares about that. They stick it into their phone and edit to add your name.

so silly.....415 nice, but not like some areas that care about those things. if you want to be a REAL san franciscan, you NEVER call it san fran.....ever ! no one who has lived there for more than one minute does. the city, san francisco, S.F., but not san fran. the only name worse, and believe me, it is, would be FRISCO !! NEVER, EVER call the city FRISCO ! otherwise, enjoy your stay in the best place in the world !!!!

San Francisco doesn't have its own exclusive area code. 415 is also used in Marin County.

I agree, no one really cares about area codes. You can probably get a 415 area code even if you're not from San Francisco.

This is the Bay Area, not a Seinfeld episode.

Just wait until the 415 area code splits (again) and some people in SF find themselves with "628" numbers - then we'll see some area-code snobbery around here. Case in point:

When you buy a cell phone you can basically get an area code where you want.

I have also gone from 415 to 510 to 925 in my lifetime, cell and landines, but I don't think anyone cares. People move all over the country and keep their cell number from wherever they originated.
