Looking at the map it is clear crime is far from uniform... geographically, virtually none above 580/13

yeah, its amazing how 580 is like a border. Oakland is like 2 different cities.

What's even more amazing is Piedmont... some of the most desirable old money in the Bay Area and 100% bordered by Oakland on all sides... unless being helicoptered in... no way to get to the city of Piedmont without going through Oakland.

I am from Chicago and lived there the first 30 years of my life. I have been in the East Bay now for a year and South Bay for two years. I work in tech. You will have a better lifestyle in Chicago due to the high cost of living here. HOWEVER, the winters in Chicago are brutal and getting worse. Both cities have an authentic urban feel, but Oakland seems less segregated to me than Chicago. Both have rich culture, but if you are in tech and don't mind downgrading your lifestyle the sunshine here is worth every penny. If you do decide to go to Chicago, be aware that gang activity has been pushing north and there are some areas on the north side that are pretty bad as well. Chicago is a fantastic city and if the winters didn't suck sewer water and there were more tech jobs, I would move back in a heartbeat. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.
