I also think this area is much prettier, at least when you're comparing downtown/central SF & LA.

Now on the upside, the LA area has a lot of opportunities, depending on what you do for a living... I'm a musician, and have always dreamed of being a studio (soundtrack/show) musician down there. If only it weren't for all the negatives I listed above, I'd move there in a heartbeat & pursue that career. They also have a more reasonable cost-of-living, since there are many "affordable" suburbs within 20-30 minutes of downtown LA. Finally, I do like the "scene" down there, which has a more punk/funky vibe than SF - lots of good tattoo shops & music clubs.

apples and oranges...they should just annex LA back to Mexico.

SF riffs off a COMPLETELY different vibe...culturally, physically, geographically, you name it. Your ONLY reason to live in LA is if you are in the entertainment biz. And that is NOT LA.. it just happens to be there...imo

I think the prevailing attitude people in the Bay have of the LA area is that topographically, geographically, and meteorogically speaking LA offers a lot. Culturally, spiritually, and intellectually speaking, the area leaves a lot to be desired.

12 Buttons,

Hollywood is LA and vice versa. It's the industry that builds LA in the beginning. That's why you see superficiality, drama and bling bling. That's the industry that puts LA on the map. Look at a Lakers' game, for example.

I agree and when I was younger, I was intrigued by the ambiance created by Hollywood and LA. Now, I can't stand the superficiality of the place, the pretense, and the phoniness. Quite turned off by "bling bling." San Francisco is the only city that I find bearable and even that may be changing. I'm leaning more towards New York and Connecticut now.

Public Transportation
I adore public transportation, and you can easily get ostracized if you don't have a car down there.

You drastically reduce the number of jobs that you can apply for when you apply near bus lines or train stations. In SF, many people use the public transportation, so almost everything is accessible via bus.

I remember missing a bus in Pasadena downtown and having to get a taxi because the next bus came in an hour and a half. And the people expecting me, asked "Why didn't you just drive?" Interesting, it didn't dawn on them that everyone doesn't have a car. I am not interested in that lifestyle.

Asthma b/c of the traffic
Also, the traffic is horrible. And if you live near a freeway, prepare for asthma. Ask friends over 50yrs old, if they have asthma. Unfortunately, half of my friends that stayed there developed some breathing condition.

Man i was just chopping it up with a buddy who just got back from living in LA. Sounds real crazy out there. He was in LA county jail for selling(i couldnt disceminate the ghetto slang but Im pretty sure it was crack or somthing like that) and he got stabbed. Apparantly, it was because he was mexican and from the bay, and kicked it with the blacks, which i guess your not supposed to do in LA. Needless to say the only thing that saved his life is that while he was sleeping, his black friends woke him up moments before he was stabbed so he had enough time to consciencously get ready to defend himself.

I'm pretty sure the drug underworld is potentially violent anywhere.

Yea but this was jail, and he was stabbed because he was mexican hanging out with blacks. That sort of thing doesnt happen in Bay Area county jails (believe me, I know from experience.. I did a stint for headbutting a Pleasant Hill Cop for trying to raise up on me ).

The jails here in LA county are ver segregated. Racial tensions between hispanics and blacks are extremely high right now.:-(
