I'm going to start furnishing a new apartment in Oakland next month from the ground up. The only things I'm planning on buying new are my mattress and bed. So, with that in mind, what are you favorite furniture stores in the East Bay or SF that offer a good mix of modern, contemporary, mid-century modern etc. furniture at reasonable (by Bay Area standards) rates? Yeah, I know how use Yelp and Google and Craigslist and Ebay and Letgo etc. I'm looking for personal recommendations on stores with selection, value and quality.

West Elm, Crate & Barrel and CB2 are my favorite stores

CB2 is generally the cheapest of the three, but West Elm has a few sales throughout the year and Crate and Barrel has a big sale/clearance section on their website.

When it comes to mattresses I love temperpedic

IKEA has gotten good press for their mattresses. Good used places are Bay Home Consignment, Mid Century Mobler and Antiques & Modern. For new furniture, there's also Design Within Reach. All in Berkeley.

These are all great suggestions. I would add a couple things to them. There is a Crate & Barrel Outlet Store in Berkeley on 4th Street, which has a lot of great clearance items. Also, when you visit West Elm and IKEA in Emeryville, there is another great furniture store called eq3 right next door. very similar to the others in terms of style. Good prices too. They are actually a large retailer from Canada

Believe it or not but Target is actually really great for furniture---online they have a huge selection. The quality is surprisingly very good--I have couple of navy, velvet covered chairs in my living room that look like I paid a lot more than I did and have held up very well over 7 years with dog and 4 kids.

I used to love going to the huge consignment store in Danville. Not sure if you want to go that far, but it's a great place to get nice used furniture.

I really like Arhaus in Walnut Creek: https://www.arhaus.com/store/walnut-creek-ca/

Pricey but beautiful furniture.

Did you say mid-century modern?

I have an Eichler, and I just got a dining set from Scandinavian Designs, which has a store in Berkeley and Concord (I shop at the Cupertino one). Highly recommended, along with West Elm - it's a good balance of price and quality.

Design Within Reach also has decor that's good for these stores but are at a higher price point.

IKEA is of course on the lower price point but my experience is that their stuff doesn't wear or last as long.
