Hopefully, someone with first-hand knowledge can chime in, or perhaps you can find information on the state park website, but I can tell you from past experience that they are out in full force by Valentine's Day, so we can't be too far off the timeline right now. At least the odds would be in your favor. It's pretty amazing to see!

Apparently a permit is now needed to see them, I haven't been there for years and it wasn't that way when I went.

Año Nuevo SP

Looking at what they call a live webcam shows come seals on the island.

I haven't visited since the 80's, but as anybody with google can easily learn :

- the elephant seal "season" at Año Nuevo is (about) Dec-Apr
- for people who can't count, we are aren't yet to the middle of that period.
- "season" goes like this : males arrive and fight to establish territory, females come later and pick their spots, they birth, pups get fed then weaned, then there's mating for next year's pups, then they leave.
- Año Nuevo State Park can be visited only via guided tours while the seals are there (for very good reasons)

So, it depends on what you want to see as to whether or not this is "a good weekend" to head to Año Nuevo. You are too late to see the fighting. The females should have all arrived by now. Birthing is either almost over or completely over. There are still seals there (and should be for another couple of months).

If you want to simply see/experience the seals, including pups, and are not interested in any particular behavior, then now is as good a time as any in the next 2-6 weeks.

Again, google is your friend - stay acquainted with her. I suppose you could ask Siri or Alexa as well.

(Yet another question that can be easily answered by an online search.)
