If you got an apartment near the South San Francisco BART station, it would take you exactly 23 minutes to get to Montgomery station downtown.

Also, which neighborhoods in South San Francisco are safe/walkable? Thanks.

Montgomery station is about a block from GGU.. 2-3 minutes walking.

South City, as we call it, is lower income but safe. The crime rate is persistently low and more and more people are choosing to live here to be close to biotech jobs at Amgen, Genentech and the like. I live in the Brentwood area, near El Camino Real and Hazelwood. I can walk to Safeway, Walgreen's, the Tanforan mall and San Bruno BART station, the movie theatre, the bowling alley, a hairstylist, a medical plaza, and some restaurants on Hazelwood that range from good to amazing. Costco is a mile's drive away, and the 391 bus to Mission & 1st, San Francisco stops at El Camino.

The only downside is that it's in the SFO airport flightpath. It makes a lot of noise and leaves a fine layer of dust on my car on a continual basis. But I found it very easy to get accustomed to.

I'd advise against living in S San Francisco for the following reasons:
- People who live near airports are at a higher risk of getting cancer
- Flight noise
- Lots of Fog
- one-way BART fare is $3.35 making daily round trip cost or 145.16 a month for 5 round-trips a week. Obviously more trips will cost you more. Factor in the cost of buying a samstran monthly pass and you will be paying a lot in transit costs.
