New year, new fishing license. Time to get busy. I am looking for a protected water where I can take my kids to catch some small palm size fish for fun.

Is Half Moon Bay harbor good for this purpose? I see two piers there; looks like will hold small fish year round. Anyone has fished inside the harbor?

I remember fishing there a few times, and once caught a 12" Flounder from one of the piers. It's been a long time but as I recall the Surf Perch were there on the incoming/high tide especially in spring.

Did you fish on the main pier ("Johnson Pier") or the designated fishing pier on the west pier?

Johnson pier looks to have deeper water and probably holds more fish; but I don't know if they allow fishing on that main pier...

The fishing pier mostly, but also from the rocky shore at high tide, though that's probably not safe for kids. Johnson has only a bit of the first part available to fish, the rest is off limits to fishing to avoid interrupting the commercial activity.
