According to a recent report from the city's Budget and Legislative Analyst, there are about 150,000 fewer office workers on any given workday in downtown San Francisco than there were before the pandemic.

As of 2022, downtown San Francisco had the lowest level of post-pandemic recovery of 62 North American cities analyzed in an Institute of Governmental Studies study, the report notes. At 31%, the city also had the highest rate of jobs in professional, scientific and management services – all areas that are "compatible with remote work."

It could be difficult to entice people back when the things that made the city attractive in the first place (bars, restaurants, clubs) no longer exist due to the lockdowns. These businesses will be replaced with something else, but how many Chipotles and Starbucks does a city need?

Expect to see something like "Giuseppe's Italian Bistro now Starbucks #1,132,988,334"

Not much. WFH is a new normal and a fundamental change in how businesses work. It may have been aided by the start of the pandemic, but many companies realize the cost savings (provided the productivity of their employees stay on track).

My wife's company still has abbreviated WFH and I doubt they will go back to fulltime work in office. And as long as that's possible, people will move out of expensive city centers regardless of what politicians do.

40% of employees that still work remotely at least once a week claim they’d quit if their employer mandated a full-office return.

They appointed the people that put in all these lockdowns and mandates and did nothing to ease them, quite the opposite actually.

Sure but the Bay Area is more extreme with it than anywhere else and I'm sure policy, mentality, etc.. play a role in that.

They may be extreme, but the trend is still WFH regardless of where one resides as stated in the article above.

I never suggested otherwise but SF, and the Bay Area in general for that matter, has had the worst recovery of any major city and it's because of the people leading it imo.

Yes, I understand. Regardless, the country is in a new normal and it's unlikely things are going to change any time soon. Politician have little to do with it.
