California School Performance Maps

Frankly the public schools in Oakland are not that great for kids that age.

Common problem for urban school districts all over the country. Generally speaking urban high schools suck.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.

Look carefully. Oakland Tech is much improved in recent years, and has some programs for academic-minded kids. One advantage of living in Oakland is that there are a lot of things for kids not only in Oakland, but also in Berkeley and San Francisco, which you'd have access to. An example--the theatre workshops for teens at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Also, I'd guess that coming from Long Beach your son would be used to a complex, diverse school and better able to deal with it.

Skyline, Oakland High and Oakland Tech are Oakland's 3 largest high schools and they all have lots of students who do quite well and succeed.

Hey, Tom Hanks graduated from Skyline.

Oakland also has private High Schools...

7 High Schoolers from those I work with attend Head Royce and none live in Oakland... they live in Piedmont, Orinda, Alamo and Castro Valley... yet, they send their kids to Oakland every School Day.

Another 2 have kids in Bishop O'Dowd which has a student body from all over the Bay Area... even as far away as Pleasanton and San Francisco and O'Dowd is on 98th ave...

Oakland does have some top of the top High Schools.
