My Husband just got a new position near the BART-Embarcadero Station. We live in Mountain View but will have to move b/c of a significant pay cut. We are thinking Pleasant Hill...What is the commute like? Are there areas we should avoid? We have 2 kids (the oldest will be starting kinder in the fall). We have only been in the Bay area for 2 years so any information about schools, and maybe other areas that we might like would be helpful! Thanks in advance.

Let us know your price range and we can give you more info. The elementary schools are pretty good, depending where in Pleasant Hill you live. I would look west of the 680 freeway. As you move west into the hills, it gets even more expensive with better schools and housing stock.

The commute by car should be avoided due to bottlenecks at the Caldecott tunnel and Bay Bridge. The commute by BART is very easy, and depending on where in Pleasant Hill you end up living you could use either the Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, Lafayette or Concord Bart Station. You can check the Bart website for the actual time to reach the embarcadero station.

I agree with the prior person, that you should look for housing west of the 680 freeway.
