It is. Anything east of the lake (including southeast) and below 580 is East Oakland (beginning at 1st Ave) and anything west of 980 is West Oakland. Those are pretty clear, but what people can't seem to agree on is where Deep East begins. I always thought it was anything after Hegenberger/73rd, but some transplants I have spoke to claim its anything past High St. What do you guys think? It doesn't make much sense to me if the change is at High since that would make most of the East end up being Deep East.

ive heard 73rd alot, but ive heard people call the ville part of the deep too, so maybe seminary? between high and seminary is definitely not the deep, but ( havenscourt) between seminary and 73rd could be. like i said though, most people think it starts at 73rd

I dont consider 73rd to be the Deep East but my cousins who live there disagree. LOL

To me its closer to 98th on down but then what do I know?

the 80s 90s and 100s are definitely the deep
other than that its fuzzy; everyone disagrees about the exact border

Mapwise, both 73rd/Hegenburger and 98 are nice big routes... but I'd say 73rd.

Funny -- when I hear Deep east, I don't consider the newer parts of commerical Hegenburger or the Coliseum are to be part of it.

Well I guess there's at least a consensus that the two that had claimed the border as High St. are incorrect. Thanks everyone!

Yeah I agree. I never really thought of the area around Pak n Save or 85th/Baldwin, or anything west of 880 as Deep East. But I do consider the area where the 8-5 Ville used to be and the area around 98th/Edes (Brookfield I think?) to be. I think it just doesn't seem right to label the more commercial parts as such.

One side of 98th/Edes is "Quiet Village" (Brookfield) that's what we always called it and the other Sobrante Park...

Refreshing to hear that it's not as bad on the inside as it appears on the outside: I'm going through the final loan approval process for a condo on macarthur blvd. in millsmont -- expecting to close escrow Nov. 6 th 2009 -- and found your post to be a sigh of relief, in some regards. I hope to be a positive-present neighbor.

Am I missing something? I count 111 in the post, but SFGate says 124 in 2008. SFgate also has updated data showing 82 as of 9/23/09. I assume the other 13 from 2008 are probably in East Oakland somewhere. Its good to see the city behind last years pace for a change.
