If you can get a government handout you can pay only $100 per month but the waiting lists for most housing subsidy programs are a mile along.

Even if you split a tiny studio apartment in a crime ridden neighborhood 4 ways, you will still pay more than $100 per month - if you are paying market rate rents.

"Government handouts" should be reserved only for those that are desparately in need of assistance. If you have to rely on a govt program to help you pay for housing, maybe the bay isn't the place for you.

They should be only for those cases but instead they become a lifetime and multigenerational entitlement. Unfortunately, in most cases there are are no time restrictions or even education/ job training requirements on assistance. There are some exceptions but this is probably the biggest flaw in the Section 8 and public housing programs.

Section 8 is based on income, ability and availability.

First you need to be income eligible... currently up to $40,200 for Section 8 and $59,800 for Public Housing...

Ability applies to age, illness and disabilities...

Availability to work is most often a single parent with minor or disabled child that is not available due to family obligations.

Note the median income for a family of 3 living in Oakland CA is $80,400 and Section 8 upper limit eligibility is 50% of this...

It is common for generational Housing Subsidies... often a single parent has a child that will then have a child as a minor and the cycle repeats...

Didn't mean to hi-jack this thread... just think it's important to state the area median income so those thinking of coming here have some idea...

If you live in your car and spend $100/mo on car insurance, I guess that could count..
