I got my last one at Sears (a Kenmore). For install you can either DIY or Sears will refer an installer. After the PG&E rebate (not sure if they still offer it) the damage was not too bad.

Least Expensive for most is Home Depot or Lowes with one of their discount cards...

I also bought heaters from APD in San Leandro CA... they cater mostly to trade... the 40 gallon on display is $419 plus tax.

Water Heaters have more than doubled in price due to California's new stringent Nox requirements... There was a time I paid $88 for new 30 gallon gas heaters at Home Base.

In addition, installation, seismic strapping, City Permit and any additional work is extra depending on what you have... neighbor had one installed from one of the big box companies for $850...

Don't forget haul away of the old one.
