I might be moving to the Bay Area in the near future, and would be working in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco. I've lived in Berkeley in the past and absolutely loved it - it's by far my favorite city - plus my fiance will be going to school at Cal. How doable would it be to live in Berkeley (preferably near the gourmet ghetto) and commute to Pacific Heights? I'm willing to go to work early and come back late in order to avoid the heaviest traffic, as long as the hours wouldn't be too crazy (ie I don't want to go to work at 5am and drive home at 8pm). Thanks for any advice!

It should be an easy commute via public transportation. If you took BART over to the Embarcadero station, you could either take Muni (either 1, 2, or 3 depending on the precise location) to take you to your final destination.

Agree with this, downtown Berk is great but you don't want to deal with University Ave traffic and you definitely don't want to deal with the Eastshore/Bay Bridge drive on a daily basis. Adjusting your hours would not help with that commute one bit.

BART plus MUNI as noted would work.

If you do decide to drive try to flex to a late schedule (e.g. starting work late morning and ending in the evening). Please note parking in that area can be tough at times.

Thank you all for the replies. I guess living in LA made me forget about the great public transportation up there. BART + MUNI sounds perfect.

I think the traffic in Berkeley going to the Bay Bridge is probably the worst in the bay area. I wouldn't want to do it every day.
