In my line of work, I run a lot of analysis for city compensation structures, but I think San Francisco is the craziest city I have ever seen. You have more than 40 employees making over 1/4 million per year and nearly a third are of the employees are making more than 6 figures.

Cost of living blah blah blah, but I mean seriously... half a million dollars a year for a deputy chief?

Well, that's not a standard salary.

Im guessing that's this person's salary plus a boat load of overtime. Many people earn a lot of OT in law enforcement.

Also, I think these stats also include highly compensated retirees?

Well, you know.. property tax rates are low and protected by Prop. 13, there's no city income tax, so it all begs the question, where does the money to pay all these people come from? I know a lot of it is payrolls, hotel taxes, parking, and building permits, but it just doesn't seem like nearly enough.

I read a story on Yahoo a few months ago where the location with the highest average wage earners was Virginia/Washington DC. This, of course, is due to all the highly paid government workers in the area which I find a little disturbing.

That's true. Look at this. It is based on survey of Forbes but is in line with what you read.

Highest-income counties in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

25 highest-income counties by median household income (2009) [1]
Number of counties by state in following lists: Virginia 6 plus 2 independent cities, Maryland 4, New Jersey 3, New York 3, California 2, Colorado 1, Georgia 1, Pennsylvania 1, Tennessee 1, Utah 1.
Of the top 25 counties, 11 are part of the Washington Metropolitan Area, 6 counties are part of the New York Metropolitan Area, and 2 counties are part of the San Francisco Bay Area. By Census region, 14 counties are located in the South, 7 in the Northeast, 4 in the West, with none located in the Midwest. 18 of the 25 counties are part of the densely-populated Northeast Megalopolis.

I believe the police chief finally has retired recently. Thank goodness.

The bad thing is that these government employees don't get laid-off as much as folks in the industry, and stay their until retirement raking in tons of money.

Oakland's Deputy Chief retired with 29 1/2 years on the job at age 51 with 180k pension and lifetime medical... he was credited for 30 years due to unused sick and vacation.

Other districts in the Bay Area have Fire Department personnel with 200k pensions and some I know receive multiple pensions... I think Union City or Newark is/was not part of Calpers retirement... it is not unusual to receive multiple pensions when you can retire at age 50... plenty of time to start another one
