Hi there,

I am going to be relocating from Ohio to Oakland this summer for grad. school. I am looking to rent and I was wondering if anyone here can tell me what neighborhoods I should be looking in.

I would like to live somewhere relatively nice but not too expensive, being able to walk or ride my bike to the store/out on the town would be a plus. It would be great to be around other students but I am not opposed to living in an urban-ish family neighborhood. Oh, and I have a dog so if anyone knows of any pet-friendly rental companies that would be a great help!

Thanks!!

Why are you moving to Oakland? Is your school in Oakland? Oakland is really crime infested and dangerous in many areas.

Are you going to Mills? If so, there's not a whole lot happening in that area in terms of nightlife/shopping, and I'd recommend checking out the following neighborhoods: Rockridge (more students, near Berkeley, lots of nightlife, lots of shops, near BART), downtown/uptown (near BART, some bars, though not as lively as other downtowns), Piedmont Ave (restaurants/bars all located on one strip, lots of apartment housing nearby), Jack London (tons of brand new condos, close to downtown/Alameda, new 'ferry building' type market being built, however noisy from nearby train tracks), Lake Merritt (lots of jogger/bikers, good restaurant selection, downtown is walkable ~20 mins), Fruitvale or Laurel (more family oriented, some shops, but more residential, also less expensive), or Glenview (some restaurants, close to Montclair, nice area but farther from the action).

Oh great...here we go again. Mr. Fantastic is trying to hi-jack yet another Bay Area thread.

Don't you live in Orange County? You don't see any of us Bay Area people here bombarding all the threads in the OC section.

I lived in Alameda county for 6 years. My opinion is both educated, and valid.

In response the question above, I will be attending Mills.

I am open to living a little outside Oakland. But I'm also willing to give Oakland a try. I know there is a lot said about the crime and what not but I grew up outside of Cleveland, one of the most underappreciated cities, as long as I'm not putting myself in the heart of it, I think I'll be ok.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Yes you have the right idea. Any city outside of Oakland, save Richmond and San Leandro, should be okay.

Were you planning on having a car at all? How long are you willing to commute to school? I live in Lake Merritt area, and I've noticed there are tons of Mills students living around here (at least going by the bumper stickers/sweatshirts I've seen), so I think it's definitely viable, and you may be able to find people to carpool with. Are you planning on having roommates? What's your rental budget look like?
