I have my other thread about my new job in Santa Clara.

Now, I ask my second big moving related concern. How do I actually move across the country?

It's 2465 miles from where I live right now, to my employers address in Santa Clara.

When you move so far, what do you take?
How do you choose what to take?
Do you buy a plane ticket and just buy everything new?

Anyone got any good move across the country tips or tricks?

Do you have nice stuff, or are you just getting out of college?

Take with you the irreplaceable stuff, the things that mean a lot to you.
If you have cheaper furniture, it's usually cheaper and easier than going to the trouble and cost of paying movers...to just get a plane ticket and start over - buy or lease new furniture there.
But if you have expensive things, sentimental things, that you want to keep forever, take them.

Don't get freaked out! Think of it, as an opportunity and an adventure.

Craigslist, Salvation Army, etc... free and cheap is best when you are moving across the country and just out of college. Get it when you get here...don't pay the cost of shipping it cross-country. Even better if you rent a room in a house--only need to furnish your bedroom! (Not the whole house!) And you may have access to housemates appliances sometimes if needed.

Lolz, Just getting out of college. My furniture is becoming crap. At the same time, I feel bad tossing things like my coffee maker and then buying a new coffee maker out there. Feels like pitching $40 down the toilet.

Craigslist, my man! You can probably get $10 for the coffeemaker

Sell and buy again is the easiest choice, if you have nothing of real value yet.

ABF-UPACK is a great cross country mover, if you absolutely need to do it.

i've moved cross-country three times and my recommendation is to leave your furniture behind, and rent a small Uhaul for the remainder of your personal belongings. It's not worth the hassle, time, or physical effort involved in moving furniture. Just sell it, buy new furniture when you get here. The rest of your stuff will fit into a small moving truck which you can drive yourself (cheapest) or pay a moving company to drive it. .... or a POD. Which can be a really useful alternative to a moving truck.

Other advice would be to use the opportunity to clean house before you move - throw out all the unnecessary stuff, the paperwork you dont' need, the books you don't want to keep, the clothing you don't use any more.

I can't think of any other tips except setting up the postal mail forwarding from your old address.
