I just recently got a job in Santa Clara, close to 101, and consequently our family of three will be moving from LA to the south bay area in two weeks. As far as safety and amenities go, I have no idea how the neighborhoods in this region are, so I would appreciate it if anyone here could guide me towards some of the better, family oriented neighborhoods in (at most) 15 mile radius of this area where we can rent a 2BR apartment in the $1600 to $1900 range. Thanks in advance!

Generally, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Milpitas, or Mountain View are nice areas, you would be looking at the top of your range (and likely higher) for a 2BD rental.

Rentals move fast here. Once you find one you like, put in an application and deposit and grab it, or it will likely be gone.

In that area with your price range you are looking at a older basic apartment complex. Not one of the luxury complexes that are available in the area. Like the other poster said be prepared to jump at a place you want fast...I have heard of there being multiple bids on apartments in the region.

Thanks for the help. It seems that South San Jose is somewhat cheaper. Is that, and San Jose in general, considered a safe family-friendly place?

Yes for South San Jose. Cheaper due to supply and the longer commute times.

San Jose in general- can't generalize - San Jose the city is a big place with over a million people- it's safe and family friendly for the areas south and west of downtown.

The area that Google defines as "South San Jose" isn't very good. As long as you're west of the Caltrain tracks, the south side is fine. The main roads of interest are Almaden and Blossom Hill. There are good and bad pockets all over San Jose, though. Use something like Propertyshark to find out when the building was built - if it was built before 1975, don't even pursue it.
