I realize this topic has likely been explored ad nauseam but I am moving to PA to work at Stanford and need a place to live. My budget is $2800--do you think I can find a small house in PA to rent or am I dreaming? I'm a single mother trying to keep my stress with traffic, the school shuffle to a minimum.

I dont know for sure, but I highly doubt it, that's likely the rental of a 1-2 bdrm apt. Check craigslist for listings, this is the best source for rentals in the bay area. Also note, do not look at places in East Palo alto, its a separate city and not desirable. After you get an idea of what you can afford where, then you can ask more specific neighborhood questions.

A house rental is unlikely at that price. PA is one of the most desired and expensive neighborhoods in the Bay Area. You could find an apartment for that price, though.

Is there no one at Stanford who can help you out with relocation connections? I thought I heard they had special housing for employees...and if not that maybe someone there would have some connections to finding a rental.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely ask about that today. I know a lot of people commute, my new supervisor lives in Sausalito. Such a commute would truly be lamentable for me, I'd be burned out in a week.

Its not necessary to commute that far, you can find more affordable (relatively) rentals much closer. Some of your options that are probably the best bang for your buck nearby would be Redwood city, foster city, sunnyvale to name a few.

Sausalito is a crazy commute, certainly not one chosen for it's affordability.

ITA with thecooler! You also might find some hidden gems by word of mouth and luck. I have never been the lucky recipient of such rental fortune here, but I have friends who have.

You'll be able to find a townhouse or duplex in Redwood City, Sunnyvale, or Mountain View for under 2800$. The bay area uses craigslist, take a look.
