Hello all,

My husband and I recently moved to the Bay Area from San Diego due to his job. We are in Cupertino corporate housing right now, but are looking for a place. We are both in our late 20s, no kids. I found a really nice looking house in San Mateo Parkside, but I know nothing about that area. Is it safe? Is it nice? I know it's fairly close to some cute downtown areas (like downtown burlingame, san mateo, etc.) but I want it to also be a safe, nice area. Any opinions are welcome! Thanks in advance.

That's the area just northeast of the 101/92 interchange, right? I have a coworker who lives there. It's the cheapest part of San Mateo. Access to and from 101 is scary, and you can't get on 101 southbound from Kehoe at all - you have to go eastbound out to Fashion Island Blvd. in Foster City and double back on the 92. Same thing coming back from the north as there's no exit for Kehoe. Public transit access is almost nil. It's not particularly close to downtown San Mateo or to Burlingame.

Transportation issues aside, it's a nice place to live. There really aren't any bad parts of San Mateo.

If you mean San Mateo Park, that's a neighborhood in San Mateo near the Burlingame/Hillsborough border. It's very nice and safe, however it's an upscale area with expensive homes.

If you are working in Cupertino, that would be quite a commute to do everyday. A closer town to Cupertino with a nice downtown is Campbell which has light rail service into San Jose Welcome to Downtown Campbell (http://www.downtowncampbell.com/about.php - broken link).

In San Mateo, there is the San Mateo Park neighborhood and the Parkside neighborhood. Which one are you talking about?

I assumed it was the area around Parkside Elementary. Yes, they are two very different areas. San Mateo Park is west of El Camino Real around Poplar Ave.

The only two things I don't like about the Parkside area are that you have to drive to find groceries and everyone seems to have a big truck that no one wants to park in his/her driveway. I'm just not used to seeing the streets, EVERY STREET, completely clogged with trucks and cars. No one uses his/her garage any more? I find this really detracts from the neighborhood's look. Other than that...it's a nice place to live and safe.
