My wife and I currently live in San Mateo, but may need to relocate soon. We're wondering what cities in the Bay Area best match San Mateo's best amenities, i.e. access to 3 major freeways, 30 minutes from each major city (San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland), walking distance to the Bay, hills, lagoons, etc. Any thoughts?

San Mateo is 30 minutes to San Jose? Any time I've tried to drive it as a commute, it took an hour. Alameda or Oakland Lakeshore would be the most central.

It's only ~45mins from SF Fin Dt to SJ (Santana Row) area on 280 at many hrs, incl many rush hrs, so no doubt SM is 30mins away if use 280

Dpdg upon budget, would prefer LosAltosHills area for more convenient, more scenic, lower crime location....unless one works in EastBay, proximity to economically-irrelevant and crime-ridden EastBay is prob undesirable anyway (and many in PA area view proximity to SF as similarly useless, except for occasional business dinners in City)
