We will be visiting Santa Fe and Taos in two weeks or so and would like you, locals, tell us about the best food is to be had.

We are not interested in chains, tourist destinations or even, necessarily, swanky. We want to know where the locals go for the best food.

Thank you!!!

Do you like New Mexican food? That would be the first question I would ask someone who wants to eat at a restaurant in Santa Fe. We have LOTS of good ones, but that won't matter if you don't like that cuisine.

My favorite places for New Mexican are:

La Choza (my favorite; near the railyard, great atmosphere)

Maria's New Mexican Kitchen (the quintessential Santa Fe place to go. Sometimes inconsistent food, but the atmosphere is worth a visit there.)

Castro's (inexpensive, great menu, always great food)

The Pantry (usually the green chile is very hot)

Tecolote Cafe (breakfast place - great breakfast burritoes with pretty spicy chile; their muffin basket is fun)

Los Amigos (cheap and always excellent; small can be crowded at meal times)

Guadalupe Cafe (next to the State Capitol Building, so where the legislators hang out)

Atrisco's (fairly new place in DeVargas Mall; really good)

Blue Corn Cafe (two locations, both good)

Burrito Cafe on the Plaza (huge menu - plan to spend some time deciding what to get, LOL. Always super fresh and good)

Plaza Southside (not toally New Mexican food, but that is usually what I order!)

**********

All of the above restaurants are inexpensive.

I usually choose New Mexican food when I eat out (I didn't move to NM to eat a lot of other kinds of food, but there are good non-New Mexican too. One of my favorites is Piccolino's Italian Restaurant. The place is not fancy but the food is awesome. I am from the NE U.S., so finding good Italian in Santa Fe was really impressive to me.)

Thank you SOOO much, Towanda. If I ever can return the favor with Oklahoma restaurants, don't hesitate to ask.

I've only been to town for a weekend back in October but I thought the Tecolote Cafe for breakfast was fantastic. Spicy chile, vegetarian friendly, huge breakfast, and great coffee.
