We're recovering from sticker shock after getting our FL driver's licenses and registering 2 vehicles (Jeep Grand Cherokee & Mitsubishi Eclipse) Total came to $ 940.00.

Also, while at the DMV a woman seated next to me (who was 75 years old) was renewing her license. She stated to the clerk that she did not need glasses before looking into the screen for the vision test. In 10 attempts she was able to get one letter correct with each try. She was "passed" and given a license with no restrictions. So for the next 10 years she's good to go. Scary!

That is crazy! Florida should be the LAST state to allow renewals every 10 years! Even in Ohio, it's 4 years...

I've had my license since I was 19. I'm 37 now and have to renew this year.

The license thing is bad but I had no idea it cost that much to register a car (or two) here. Holy cow! That's unbelievable!

Just what we said when it was all totaled up! I did get one special license plate (which was $ 50.00 extra) but even minus that it's outrageous. Clerk said fees were raised by (former) Gov. Christ. Since we're new to FL, we're just learning about state and local politics so I can't vouch for the correctness of that information.

Sorry I made a mistake. License renewal is every 8 years NOT 10 years.

I wonder if this is a new thing? I've had mine for nearly 20 years and every few years I just pay the renewal fee by mail and they send me a new sticker for the back of my license. No eye exam, no doc check or anything.

Honestly, I think that's a bad idea for just the reasons you mention, Iamrita. But it seems like, going by the example you gave, it doesn't make much difference. If they're just going to let drivers "skate" past under the wire.

The amount you paid is really an eye opener!

I'm staring right at my Florida license and it was issued/renewed in 2007 and expires in 2013. That's only 6 years. However, it was sent to me after I paid the fee. I just renewed it online and got my new license in the mail. I had no idea they keep using the same photo. So that means in 2013 the picture on my driver's license will be at least 12 years old.

I never thought I'd be saying that I wish I looked as good as my driver's license picture. LOL

That's pretty funny! I have the early 90's puffy hair in my photo and I was on the way to work, when I worked at the Sheriff's dept. So I have my uniform on in my pic as well. Probably would have gotten all "dolled up" if I knew I was gonna hold onto it for the next 20 yrs. Hahaha.

I'm guessing the time between license renewal has recently changed. Just like the new law requiring all the various documents to be brought in upon renewal.
