Could anyone give me their opinion as to whether any Florida Gulf Coast (or even Atlantic Coast) cities "live similarly" to places like Santa Barbara? Ignore the humidity differential, please; I'm really just talking about other quality of life factors. Thanks!

Sarasota - similar size, similar look (without the bluffs of course). I have met many Californians who have come here agree there are a lot of similarities here. Big exception is that property is WAY affordable compare to SB. I have visited SB and see a lot of similarities. Sarasota does not have the mountains but the beaches are far better than SB - beautiful white sand and warm water!

But I would argue that Santa Barbara has better weather.

The OP specifically said it's not about the weather.

I understood that before I posted. Sarasota is a nice affordable place to live.

Agree with gypsychic. I've been to Santa Barbara and Sarasota would be the Gulf Coast parallel.

similar, depends on how you define "quality of life factors". If you are looking for social services, FL is not the place to go. Housing is way cheaper, wages are way lower, define "quality of life".

What about Sarasota versus Bradenton? Is Sarasota clearly more "Santa Barbara-like"? Or are these two Gulf Coast cities similar enough to be reasonably interchangeable?

Sarasota and Bradenton are night-and-day. Sarasota is the one most like Santa Barbara. Bradenton is an "old-Florida" kind of blue-collar beach town with a totally different vibe. Sarasota is known as a cultural, wealthy enclave, with a lot of Mediterranean architecture and a glitzy look to a lot of it.
