I would imagine that it would be ok providing you make sure that it's secure and can't fall over or anything else falls on it. It would be terrible to open your pod and find your bike under a huge pile of heavy things.

My customer that I mentioned previously did not send his motorcylce in the POD to Las Vegas. He drove his car and had his motorcycle shipped by a different company. I am not sure which one.

I have used PODS in Canada in the past 2 moves and would use it again. VERY easy way to move. My last move, I was down sizing quite a bit, so I sold a lot of stuff I did not want/need anymore, got a huge POD container and hired 2 moving guys to load it. I packed high value items myself, moved them to the garage (double car garage) so when the guys arrived they essentially had to move only from the garage to the POD in front of it, plus the heavy items from the basement and large furniture items. The contents of a 4 bdrm house were loaded in about 2 hours, and kept in storage for a few weeks. Once we closed the new place, they dropped it off and I hired 2 guys again to do the "reverse", unload to the bsmt and move large items. Then you just unpack boxes.
To me, it was MUCH cheaper than a moving company and allowed some flexibility that I much needed since the closing dates were not the same between the properties.

I wouldn't use a pod to ship a motorcycle just because you can't put cable ties through the bottom of the pod to secure your bike. There'd actually be no way to secure it unless you propped it up with really heavy furniture even then the bike would scratch and grease up your furniture.

Either trailer it or have it shipped.

Well, you could run straps cris-crossing the sides, like I did with this 1961 McCuloch gokart...

United/Mayflower offers containers, and their weight limit (in a 8' x 8' x 16' container) is 7000 pounds. That's at least 1000 pounds greater than Pods offers, at the reason I contracted with them. It was dropped off/picked up using a flatbed hauler, like you see towing cars, and didn't use any method to actually "weigh" the loaded unit. Pods uses a hydraulic hoist with calibrated pressure gauge reading in "pounds" and if the needle goes into the red, they set it back down. I don't know it they'd wait and give you time to unload some of the weight, or if you'd have schedule another pick-up.

I told the guy that came to pick up my unit that I had several really heavy pieces right on the end, and that I could get them off in under five (<5) minutes. He didn't flinch when he was hoisting it up, and I asked how much did he think it weighs; he just said it was really heavy, as the hydraulics groaned...

I may still need to get a second container for the garage

Recommend PODS..

Moved from NY-Maui... roughly $9000..

Told them when I wanted it in NY...sat in my driveway until I told them when to pick it up...

POD went to San Diego until I found a home in Maui (POD charged roughly $250/month storage fee in San Diego, about the same as a large storage unit)

I called them when I knew the closing date on the house.. POD showed up the day we were to get the keys....

Called them when I was done 2 days later.. They picked it up as scheduled...

There may be cheaper? But the POD was floor level for easy loading, convenient and fit our 3 bedroom home almost completely.. Only had to leave a few things behind.

Thank you to everyone who has posted their opinion! We thought PODs (or something similar) would be the best option for us and I think we've confirmed that on here. We appreciate all of your feedback! Thanks!

Reviving this thread--
will be closing on house middle of May and while we won't be moving lot of furniture since FL house is vacation home--
there are couple of older chairs we have in storage that I want to practice redoing and some other items that we might want to bring
my husband does not want to pull a trailer when we make our first long time stay and bring our pets...and because we are bringing the pets we won't really have room in his Tahoe to bring the chairs and other stuff...

I know PODS has 7x7 containers that you can block off--but still would have too much empty space I think...
any other suggestions???
