My husband and I are avid bicyclists and though I'm aware of the Legacy Trail between Sarasota and Venice I was wondering about bicycle lanes. We are looking for a home to retire to in two years and I'm trying to pinpoint which communities have the most bike lanes on the road where we could ride to the beach, stores or parks. Any recommendations?

Bellagio on Venice Island has bicycle paths that lead to the beach as well as historic downtown. I am not sure what your price range is. Here are some listings in that area.

Thanks TamRE but that's too expensive for us! I was wondering about bikable communities in Sarasota or Venice that are $100,000 or less. We'll keep our summer cabin in norther WI and spend 7-8 months a year in the Florida home.

First you need to know that I like bike riding more than anyone. It's my passion.
You need to be a bit more specific regarding an area. I live in Sarasota and ride my bike to work most days as well as on the weekends. While many roads / streets lack bike lanes, I feel safe finding routes to most places. Saying that there are roads to avoid at all costs, but most communities have them. Many roads are without bike lanes but are safe to ride on.
If you can be more specific as to where you want to go and from where I can help. You can access Oscar Sherer State Park from the Legacy trail.
We live in an older part of the City of Sarasota, near the Amish community of Pinecraft. It's affordable and convenient to everything we need. I could easily ride to the beach,in fact many beaches, stores, downtown, etc , from my front door. Marina Jack and the bayfront is an easy 15 minute bike ride away.
One good rule to remember even around here is there should always be something on your bike:Your butt, your eyes, or a good lock.

I live in Gulf Gate and ride my bike absolutely everywhere. It's turned into my primary mode of transportation.

One thing I would not recommend is riding your bike home from the Siesta Key Oyster Bar after a couple of beers.
