Just curious, was this where South Bay Yacht Club & Marina is now? Does anyone have photos? Just the kind of thing that piques my interest!

Yes, Floridaland was located exactly where Southbay now is. I have some pictures that my grandma took in some of our old photo albums. I'll try to dig them up

My friend Kim wrote a pretty good article about FloridaLand: Yahoo! Groups

FloridaLand closed the year before I was born but my brother and the rest of the family used to go there quite a bit. We have pictures of Miss Kitty who sung in the saloon. She also has pics of the dolphins swimming in the Holiday Inn pool when the red tide hit. Moby was the main dolphin star in the show.

cool, i'd love to see the pix. i found someone was selling an old brochure on ebay then i started looking at what was online but didn't see any personal pix. Looks like Bentley's is the left over hotel. Your friend's article says the Holiday Inn became the Osprey Inn which I looked up and is Bentley's, which I suspected. ok, i'm a n00b but i think it's really interesting

I have a collectors plate hanging on the wall.
I believe that "beggar" is one of the porpoises from the show that was released when they closed the park.

Is it true about Beggar? I would love to know! Does anyone know how old Beggar is?

I can remember, after the park closed down, seeing porpoises doing flips and other routines quite often in Blackburn bay, where we lived. There was an article in the herald last week about beggar, they guessed his age at somewhere near 50. So I'm sticking with my theory.

Beggar/Mooch still sits under the Nokomis Beach Bridge. I remember swimming with him/her back in the late 70's and early 80's. I you each over at Pop's you can sometimes see Beggar. He chases the boats back and forth looking for hand outs.

Keep in mind it's illegal to fed him and he's hurt several people. In a 2006 report, researchers documented that Beggar bit 18 people over 78 days.

In 2001, Beggar dragged a Sarasota nurse under water when she swam with him.
"I felt this jaw grab my buttocks and pull me under,'' she told CBS News. She needed 50 stitches and one bite "went all the way down to the bone.''
