Contigent on getting a job of course, we are considering moving to the Sarasota area. What is to expect? We currently live in Pittsburgh. Just looking for nice, clean, safe area with a beach near by. Our price range for renting is up to 1,000 K a month. Any thoughts, suggestions, opinions would help! Thank you!

Welcome, I'm from the burg too! Well, close to it. Let people know what you want, how close to beaches, good schools and such and everyone will chime in with their opinions for you. There are a LOT of really nice areas so the more specific you can be the better people can help.

It is hard to make suggestions without having more specifics, but I'll give it a try.

Do you need 2, 3 or 4 bedrooms? Generally it will be more difficult to find a 3 bedroom home rental in the $1000 per month range as rental rates have been going up over the past year.

Do you own specialty vehicles that may not meet the HOA or condo association rules? Such as an RV or truck on overly large tires?

Do you have pets? If so, what type and weight? A lot of the landlords and most condo associations have pet restrictions of some sort. Most of the condos (if they allow tenants to have pets) limit the number of pets, weight of pets and some do not allow aggressive breeds.

Are school districts an important factor to you in a rental neighborhood?

If you're looking for a single family home to rent, there are a number of neighborhoods that are popular neighborhoods with both renters and buyers and may have something within your monthly rental rate range. These would include Gulf Gate (34231), South Gate (34239 & 34231), South Gate Ridge (34233), Sun Haven (34231), Sarasota Springs/ Ridgewood/ Brentwood, Colonial Gables (34232), Alta Vista (34237 & 34239), Paver Park (34237). The Sarasota Springs and South Gate Ridge neighborhoods are further east of the beaches. Gulf Gate, Sun Haven and parts of South Gate would put you closest to the Siesta Key bridges. Woods of Whitfield (34243) is north of the airport so closer to St Armands and Lido beach.

For condo rentals that are closer to the beach, you'll find mostly 2 bedroom units of around 1100 sq ft living space. Most will not have covered parking. Palmer Ranch (34238) in south Sarasota has several condo communities that may possibly have a rental in your price range - Serenade, Bella Villino and Vintage Grand. Near there on Clark Road is Admirals Walk (34233). These are all newer condo communities with amenities like community pools, fitness centers and they are all fairly close to the Stickney Point bridge to Siesta Key. There are a number of older condo communities in that general area as well, some of those are age restricted to 55 and over.

We are now headed into our busiest season for rentals and real estate, which will run thru Easter. So if you are not in a particular hurry to find a rental right now, you will find more options and usually better rental rates after mid April.

You need to up your budget unless you are only looking at one bedroom apartments. Any houses in that range will be either: scams, poor condition, lousy neighborhood.
