After researching new construction in Englewood, I'm only seeing stucco homed. We would like to build a bungalow with hardie board siding. Are there any communities with this?

Hardi-board is more expensive because it cannot be attached directly to the block exterior walls. Pressure Treated wood furring strips have to be attached to the block first, and then the hardi-board is attached to the furring strips. I heard sometimes this can show a ripple/wavy look in the siding because there are spaces behind the areas where there are no furring strips.

If the exterior of the home has wood(instead of block), then it will be cheaper to install the hardi-board. But wood exterior walls are uncommon and undesirable in this area. It could cause resale issues in the future and also higher homeowners insurance.

A personal preference. I'm just not a stucco fan. I just want a beach cottage with a porch.

We usually vacation in the Destin area and there are many homes with siding for example Seaside and Watercolors. Is there a reason that I'm ignorant of?

Those are planned communities that were designed specifically for that look. A lot of the homes are also stick built up there, making various sidings easy and cheaper to install.
I've been to Seaside many times, and it is very cute and beachy (and pricey!!) This is an older area (old fishing village). There was no "master plan" for aesthetics when Englewood was developed.

My condo has hardi-plank or whatever the brand name is and it has held up so far but it does develop waves in some cases. The yard guys also have a tendency to chip or even knock off the bottom planks.

OP Destin still builds wood frame homes which is why you still see siding. I agree with you that the hardi board makes for an attractive home with the cottage look. If you can afford to build your own home, go for it. If you are at the mercy of the builder, then good luck.

Yeah - I wanted hardi-board and a beach look house with a porch. After fully evaluating the situation, I settled on a stucco beach look house with a porch. No regrets. Not one regret. In fact, I am very happy with the stucco and the house didn't lose its character.

lhayes: I suggest you take a trip to Boca Grande, just south of Englewood. Or view online photos of homes there. You will see many stucco seaside looking homes with porches. You might find that hardi-board is no longer one of your 'must haves'.
