My friend moved down to Sarasota to be near his parents, whom also moved down to Florida. My friend does not care for it, as he is from the Southeast Coast, and it is very different he says. He states there are not many young people where he lives, and nobody is friendly. I told him to move back, and told him it is not southern there. Nobody is from the South there, and people won't be friendly. Am I correct? I don't know much about the area, so I am only going on what he says.

All the northern retirees live there, duh. That's why his parents moved away from him.

I haven't met very many Southerners as most have relocated from the North, however, almost everyone has been friendly, so I don't know why he says nobody is friendly.

Well, I'm a native Floridian born in Bradenton and have lived just about everywhere in SW FL. My family has lived here for generations. Most people who live here are from "up north" and they come to FL for the nice sunny weather and so they don't have to shovel snow anymore. LOL. I think you get back what you give off, meaning if you're generally a positive person and have a good outlook on life--you'll find that.

Someone please cue "the video"---I'ts warm and sunny in FL....

It's not southern as in "the heart of dixie" - which should come as no surprise because Florida was uninhabitable (largely) before the advent of Air Conditioning.

People are friendly in SRQ - but they are diverse...meaning from all over the country (and world). You can find some "real southern" a bit on the outskirts if you are talking about pickup trucks, ranches and maybe some country dance places.

But, all in all, it's new urban and suburban. A beach and culture town.

Thank you for all your replies. I watched the video, and can tell you I will never move to Florida. Never. As for my friend, I will have to tell him some people are telling me there are friendly people there. He may just be in a neighborhood where everybody is retired but him and his wife. They say people look at them like aliens when they see them. And, I am southern, but not like you described above. I am a southern beach bum, living in a beach culture like you mentioned. What you described above is country folk or Hillbillies, not southern people.

That made me laugh. I try to be a southern gentleman. Where are you from? Some people where I live do not like people from the North moving down.

Why can't people north of Florida love where they are from? I do, I love the southeastern coast - from Tidewater, Va through the Carolinas down to Charleston, Sc. A beautiful part of the East Coast. I love it and never want to live in Florida. So , is there anybody that loves where they grew up?

That's cool your a Native. But, I like my City to have lots of locals and a local culture. I would not like living in a place where very few people are from there.
